A military spokesman in Mali said on Sunday that troops of France and Mali killed 20 militants in a joint operation against terrorist organization in north of the country.

Spokesman Col Diarran Kone said the operation was continuing in the region, a remote part of a wildlife reserve close to the border with Niger near the town of Menaka in Mali..

“But I can tell you that 20 terrorists have been neutralized, Mali has been witnessing increasingly violent acts since militants seized a Tuareg rebellion in 2012, prompting France to intervene to expel them in the following year.

Several militant organizations and criminal gangs have regrouped, carried out operations in parts of Mali and launched attacks across the Sahel region. These groups now have a large presence in areas of neighboring Burkina Faso and some remote areas of Niger.
