The Nigerian army evacuated a town in northeastern Borno state from its entire 10,000 population without warning before launching a crackdown on militants, the United Nations said Thursday.

The United Nations said in a statement that the army had moved residents of the town of Jakana to a camp 40 kilometers away, adding that some arrived without “anything or even shoes in their feet.”
