A total of 17 Chinese and Ukrainian sailors were abducted yesterday when two merchant ships attacked by Nigerian pirates in Cameroon waters, sources said Friday.

“Seventeen Chinese and Ukrainian sailors were abducted and nine of them are Chinese abducted from one of the ships,” a spokesman at the port of Douala told AFP.

A Cameroonian security official who declined to be identified confirmed the information.

The kidnapping was reported yesterday by Cameroon’s naval sources and the country’s port services, but they have no further details.

Navy sources said the kidnappers were likely ‘Nigerian pirates’ and security forces have launched a search operation.
