Tunisian President, Beji Caid Essebsi, died at the age of 92, the Presidential Office said in a statement on Thursday.

The veteran politician began to lead Tunisia in 2014, three years after the Arab Revival after Zine El Abidine Ben Ali removed, thereby sparked uprisings in several Arab countries.

He was admitted to hospital after a serious health problem last June and was re-admitted to the intensive care unit on Wednesday.

“This morning the president of the republic died in a military hospital in Tunis. The funeral will be announced later, “said the president’s office.

According to the Constitution, Speaker of the Parliament will temporarily hold the President’s duty.

Parliamentary elections are expected to take place on October 6 followed by presidential election on November 17.
