At least 73 aftershocks occurred after the earthquake in southern California on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

The 6.6 magnitude earthquake was the strongest in the past 20 years, CNN reported.

Earlier in the day, a US official said rescuers had responded to 24 emergency fires after the California earthquake.
