US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Thursday pledged to spend $700 billion on US-made products and industrial research, which he said would create paid jobs for five million people in the midst of the emerging Coronavirus pandemic.

Biden said in a speech that included the outlines of the plan near the town of Scranton, where he spent his childhood in Northeastern Pennsylvania, “My focus will be on the hard-working families: the families of the middle class from whom I come from in Scranton, not the class of wealthy investors … they are not the ones who need me, but the hard-working families.

The proposals contained new details – and a higher cost – for economic recovery policies that would cost trillions of dollars the former vice president pledged to implement if he beat Republican Donald Trump in the November 3 election.

The US economy is experiencing frequent closures due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, while a record 32.9 million people spent unemployment benefit checks in the third week of June, Labor Ministry data showed today.
