Mark Esper has sworn in as the US secretary of defense after the Senate overwhelmingly approved “90 supporters and 8 opponents“. Esper took the oath before Judge Samuel Alito, president of the Supreme Court at the Oval Office, in the presence of US President Donald Trump, who praised Esper’s experience and contributions to the US military.

Esper is the official defense minister after three people took office as acting defense secretary for six months after former defense secretary James Matisse resigned with reason of his political differences with Trump.
