US Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan on Saturday visited US border with Mexico for the second time as the Pentagon seeks a long-term plan to support President Donald Trump’s immigration policies..

Shanahan flew to McAllen, Texas, to meet border officials, inspect a facility to handle immigration applications and a border patrol center.

The visit comes two days after the White House announced Trump’s intention to nominate Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, as defense Secretary.

The Pentagon said on Friday that Shanahan had approved a $ 1.5 billion transfer to build more than 130 km of barriers along the border with Mexico as part of a phased project because Trump did not obtain congressional approval for full funding for the construction of the border wall.

Trump is keen that the US military has a bigger role in terms of the US-Mexican border. Although several members of Congress were criticized, Pentagon officials said they were looking to develop a longer-term support plan.

“The army’s support will not last indefinitely,” Shanahan told a small group of reporters accompanying him during his visit to the border.
