Several American media reported that current ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell would be the choice of Trump. US President might look for strong option to appoint new National Security Adviser. On Tuesday, Trump had fired Bolton, due to substantive disagreements via Twitter. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then made it clear that changing personnel did not mean a fundamental change in Trump’s foreign policy.

Richard Grenell is the current United States Ambassador to Germany. He is the highest ranking openly gay American official ever. He is also the longest serving U.S. spokesman at the United Nations.

Iran, after Bolton’s dismissal, hopes for some relief in the conflict with the government in Washington. “With the expulsion of Bolton as the main supporter of war and economic terrorism against Iran, there are now fewer obstacles for the White House to understand the realities in Tehran”, government spokesman Ali Rabiei tweeted on Wednesday. Tehran calls the American sanctions as “economic terrorism”.

The Foreign and Treasury Departments imposed new sanctions on Tuesday against numerous individuals and organizations, including Iranian-backed individuals.

Russia does not expect better relations with the United States after Bolton’s dismissal. “The presence or resignation of an individual, even such a senior official, can hardly affect US foreign policy”, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday, according to the Russian media. But Moscow was determined to seek a way out of the “regrettable state of relations”.

Trump has announced to appoint a new National Security Adviser next week. Until a successor to Bolton, former deputy Charles Kupperman take over the office executive. Trump and Bolton have always been cross over the past few months.

The “Washington Post” reported that one of the main reasons for the dismissal had been the difference of opinion between the Vice President Mike Pence and Bolton on agreement negotiated by Pompeo’s ministry with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Bolton was suspected of being the source for these reports. Trump had canceled a meeting scheduled for Sunday at Camp David with Taliban representatives. The reason he had called an attack in Kabul, in which an American soldier had been killed.

Bolton also pursued an irreconcilable attitude in the Iran conflict. Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif accused Bolton of wanting to involve Trump in a military confrontation with his country. Trump said in June, according to their own statements from an imminent military strike against Iran. The American president has repeatedly emphasized that he is in principle ready for talks with the leadership in Tehran. Pompeo confirmed Trump’s readiness on Tuesday following Bolton’s dismissal.

There were also differences in dealing with North Korea. Bolton pursued a hard course. Trump, on the other hand, seeks a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom he has met three times and whom he calls his “friend”. However, Trump’s efforts have not yet led to the goal of nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula.

Bolton was known as a foreign policy hardliner before he entered the White House, stubbornly advocating American nationalism. He was one of the most ardent advocates of the American invasion of Iraq, which Trump criticized as a grave mistake. Bolton was the third National Security adviser in the Trump administration. He was in office since April 2018 and succeeded General Herbert Raymond McMaster.

US media including CNN and Fox news identified a number of possible candidates for the Bolton succession. These include US Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, or Special Representative for North Korea, Steve Biegun. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal mentioned Grenell.

Richard Grenell has made a name for himself as Trump’s representative in Europe. In Germany, it was criticized that Grenell often acted little diplomatically.
