US President Donald Trump said Monday that China contacted US trade officials overnight to express its willingness to return to the negotiating table, welcoming the news which he described as a very positive development for the world.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit, Trump hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping as a great leader, saying he welcomed his willingness to conclude an agreement and calm the situation.

The bitter trade war between the world’s two largest economies saw a sharp escalation on Friday as the two countries imposed more tariffs on imports from each other.
