The United States immigration authorities on Sunday launched raids in several cities aimed at deporting 2,000 illegal immigrants who have been sentenced to leave American territory.

Immigration and Customs officials said the campaigns focused on those who arrived in American territory recently in cities such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and New Orleans, pointing out that the New Orleans campaigns were delayed on Sunday because of Tropical cyclone.

For his part, Ken Kuchenelli, Acting Director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Authority, said that these illegal immigrants received federal provisions for deportation, stressing that the priority will be to arrest the perpetrators of violent crimes in particular.

He explained that representatives of US authorities are not exploiting allegations of illegal border crossing or committing a misdemeanor as a reason for arrest during such campaigns.
