US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell suffered a fracture in his shoulder after falling at his home in Kentucky on Sunday, a spokesman said.
“This morning the leader McConnell fell into his yard, while working from his home in Louisville, his shoulder was broken, treated and discharged from the hospital,,” McConnell spokesman David Pope said in a statement.
McConnell, a 77-year-old Republican, was injured as Democrats urged him to call an emergency Senate session to discuss arms control legislation after two shootings in which 29 people were killed in Texas and Ohio in the past two days.
McConnell described the shooting in both states as “shocking” but did not respond to calls for the council to be called back from its August vacation.
