The US government on Sunday voiced concern over growing tension on the Israeli-Lebanese borders, reiterating its support for Israel and warning the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah against actions that threaten Lebanon’s security.

The office of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said earlier that Hariri called US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday, after an exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah on the Lebanese borders.

A US State Department official declined to discuss any diplomatic discussions, but said: “We are aware of those reports and we are concerned about the growing tension on the border. The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself.”
