At least 19 dead in two bomb blasts in a church in the southern Philippines, the military said on Sunday, several days after the vote for a new Islamic autonomous region.
The first explosion occurred in the Catholic church in Jolo this morning when a feast was carried out, followed by a second blast at the parking lot when the military responded to the first incident, provincial military spokesman Colonel Gerry Besana said.
“The motive is clear, violence. They are people who do not want security, “said Besana.
Five soldiers and 12 civilians were killed while 57 others were injured, he said.
However, police chief Oscar Albayalde said the death toll of 19, with 48 injuries.
“We will fully use the power of law to bring this incident to court,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said.
The army said it transferred some of the injured victims to the city of Zamboanga for treatment.
