At least 32 people were killed including 24 members of the militant group Daesh and three guerrillas in a riot incident in a Tajikistan prison yesterday.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Justice, at least five prisoners and three guards were killed by other prisoners in riot which broke out yesterday evening while others were killed during a clash with security forces while trying to calm the situation.

Prison in Vakhdat, located about 17 kilometers east of the capital of Dushanbe, occupies 1,500 prisoners.

The ministry said that when a mob killed three bodyguards and five other prisoners ‘threatened’ another.

They then arrested another prisoner as a ransom before burning the prison’s medical facilities.

“Following the restoration of the situation. 24 members of the gang were killed and 35 others were arrested. The redemption was released and the situation was calm, “the statement said.

The local prison service said the two prisoners who were killed were activists of the banned Islamic Renaissance Party group in Tajikistan.
