At least five people have been killed and at least 17 others missing as a result of torrential rains in five areas including western province of Herat, an Afghan official said.
A spokesman for the governor of the province, Gilani Farhad, said on Tuesday that the missing people were traveling on a bus, adding that the affected provinces were Kuhsan, Oba, Karoch, Shindand and Guzara, .
Farhad said the floods had destroyed hundreds of homes and 1,000 acres of farmland, as well as hundreds of livestock, and destroyed parts of the high-speed Herat-Kandahar road and closed it to traffic.
