Australia will join a US-led mission to protect shipping lines along the Hormuz Strait as tensions with Iran escalate, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said today.

Morrison said his country would provide a small warship, a P8 maritime surveillance aircraft and support staff for the British-led military.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper enlisted the help of Australia to patrol the strategic waters during a visit to Sydney earlier this month.

The move was followed by several incidents, including the detention of a tanker involving Iran and Western powers, such as Britain and the United States, based on the main canal of the Gulf country.
