At least eight Afghan soldiers have been killed and four others wounded in an attack by Taliban insurgents on a checkpoint in the central province of Daykundi, governor Anwar Rahmati said Sunday.
“Military reinforcements were deployed this morning in the Kajran district, where the forces expelled Taliban militants and killed at least 20 of its members,” Rahmati said.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack. “The militants also seized weapons and ammunition at the checkpoint”, he said.
The Taliban controls more than half of Afghanistan, with almost daily armed attacks targeting Afghan troops and government elements in different parts of the country.
