After heavy riots, the Hong Kong subway will stop operating this Saturday. The announcement made by the listed MTR operator. This was preceded by serious arguments in which a teenager was shot by the police and subway stations were set on fire by demonstrators.

“We are no longer able to provide passengers with a safe and reliable service in these circumstances, we had no choice but to make a decision to discontinue service on the entire network”, MTR said.

The Hong Kong subway carries about five million people every day. Furthermore, shopping centers and supermarkets will remain closed.

After months of protests, the government wants to bring the situation under control with a cover-up ban. The incumbent government of Hong Kong resorts to emergency laws for the first time since the beginning of the mass demonstrations.

As of Saturday, the wearing of face masks was prohibited for the next few days, head of the government Carrie Lam announced. On the other hand, further protest rallies were planned by the democracy movement in the Chinese Special Administrative Region.

The protests started some four months ago as a resistance to a draft bill for deliveries accused to the People’s Republic, which has since been withdrawn. But the demonstrators also see general freedoms endangered by the former British Crown Colony.

Meanwhile, the protests are also directed against the government in Beijing. Hong Kong has been a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic since 1997.
