An Indian court on Monday sentenced three men to life imprisonment for raping an 8-year-old Muslim girl.

The Voice of America said in its English edition that the three accused kidnapped the victim while she was alone in a field in January, where they were anesthetized and rotated for five days inside a Hindu temple in the Indian sector of Kashmir. They then beat her with a rock and buried her body in a forest near the scene.

The Indian court also sentenced five other police officers to five years in prison for destroying evidence to protect the three defendants, including a police officer and a former government official, the radio said.

Investigations revealed that the targeting of this girl – belongs to a Muslim community of shepherds – comes as part of a plan to intimidate Muslims to force them to leave the area where the incident occurred, which is predominantly Hindu.

The head of the National Union of Indian Women, Rekha Sharma, said the death penalty should have been imposed on the accused to be a lesson to others, especially as rape of cases are on rise.
