Iran has announced that it will hold joint exercises with Russia and China soon in the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean, for the first time.
Brigadier-General Qadeer Nizami, head of the international affairs and defense diplomacy section of the Iranian armed forces, said in an interview with Fars News Agency on Saturday that his country had conducted joint exercises with a number of countries. As two major powers, in the northern Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman.
He pointed out that the maneuvers take place in international and free waters i.e. the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman and will not include the Gulf.
Nizami added that officials at the level of chiefs of staff of the armed forces, defense ministers and commanders of the armed forces will visit Tehran soon and those visits will be announced in due course as part of the moves of defense diplomacy.
This comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, especially between Iran and the United States since last May, which intensified recently after the attack on Saudi oil facilities last week, where Washington accuses Tehran of being behind him.
