Iranian Education Minister Mohammad Bathaei has resigned in preparation for running for parliamentary elections in February, state media reported.

Iran’s President Hasan Rouhani agreed on the resignation of his country’s education minister, ABC News reported on Thursday.

The resignation comes as Iranian teachers hold demonstrations and large-scale strikes over the past years to protest their deteriorating living conditions.

He was appointed minister of education in Rouhani’s government in August 2017.
