Benny Gantz says he wants to reconcile the land. He promotes a government of national unity with the Likud – only without Netanyahu, It would not be a new scenario. There have been several unified governments in Israel’s history. So far, according to Gantz, the small, ultra-orthodox and right-wing extremist parties have had too much influence, forced their majority onto the majority of the population.

Eighty percent of the population agree in eighty percent of all questions. He hardly criticizes Netanyahu. In matters of security, Gantz represents even harder positions than Netanyahu, who has held office for ten years. The situation with Gaza-ruling Hamas is unacceptable. Netanyahu’s corruption cases or his attacks on the judiciary are hardly addressed. Gantz also loses a few words about economic policy, the dire situation in the housing, education and health sectors.

For economy in his blue-white alliance is a former trade union responsible. The third party of the party, Moshe Jaalon, rejects a Palestinian state and concessions, while Gantz himself says that for strategic as well as moral reasons, Israel must separate and negotiate with the Palestinians. One really agrees with blue and white only in one question: Netanyahu must go. “Gantz represents a kind of likud without Netanyahu, and there is a market for that,” says one observer. Blue-white is in polls on par with the Likud, But hardly anyone talks about the challenger, who has not set his own theme until election day. A fundamental policy change would not be expected with Gantz.

Only a year ago Gantz founded the party LeYisrael, which he later combined with other former military and the party of former television presenter Lapid to the Blue-White Alliance. His son got him to go into politics, said Gantz.

Gantz has not come up with a realistic scenario that gives him the option of governing: the left-center parties, taken together, would end up well below the 61-year minimum, with all (previously excluded) toleration of the Arab-Israeli parties, like all previous polls showed.

Rather, the traditional workers’ party and the Democratic Union are threatening to fail at the 3.25-percent hurdle. And a grand coalition between Blue-White and Likud would only come about without Netanyahu, Gantz said. But Netanyahu still has power in the Likud, some even claim: the absolute power. “There is no Likud without Netanyahu”, said Culture Minister Miri Regev on Monday.
