The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force confirmed that one of its F-35A fighter jets had crashed into the sea off the northern province of Aomori.
According to the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) on Wednesday – the commander of the fighter has not been found so far, noting that they found parts of the tail at the site of the crash.
The force had been training with three other aircraft of the same type, the force said.
Defense Minister Takeshi Evaya said that an inquiry committee at the air force office would discuss the cause of the accident to prevent its recurrence.
Japanese media reported on Tuesday evening that a Japanese Air Force F-35 fighter jet disappeared from radar screens while flying over the Pacific Ocean.
