More than 100 people arrested in Kazakhstan demonstrations

Authorities in Kazakhstan on Saturday arrested more than 100 people for taking part in demonstrations without prior authorization to protest the country’s handling of power.

Kazakhstan police have warned foreign correspondents to photograph the demonstrations in Almaty, the new capital of Nur Sultan, Karagandy and Ural, a demonstration coinciding with the 70th birthday of the outgoing president, Nazarbayev.

Nursultan Nazarbayev abruptly resigned last spring and nominated his ally Kassym Tokayev to succeed him. Tokayev won 70 percent of the presidential election last month.
