The city of Moscow has won the World’s Best Tourist Destination Award in a competition in which New York City, London, Paris, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon took part, Russia Network reported Thursday.
“We have been awarded the most respected award in tourism. We have won an Oscar,” said Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin on his Twitter page.
Sobyanin said that Moscow received 19.5 million tourists this year, without considering the tourists who will visit Moscow during the New Year celebrations, and without counting the 45 million visitors to the city for one day.
The head of the capital’s tourism committee, Ekaterina Bronnikova, stressed that the World Tourism Awards are a “quality mark” and a signal that “Moscow is strengthening its position as an international tourist center”.
“This is a city with a rich history and culture, and one of the largest economies in the world, a huge commercial city, which makes Russian capital a positive impression for tourists from different countries, where they feel comfortable and safe”, she said.
