South Korean fire department helicopter carrying seven people crashed into the sea off the disputed Dokdo Islands with Japan late Thursday, a fire official said.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said the South Korean Coast Guard and private boats were combing the area in search of survivors, while the Defense Ministry also sent ships, planes and divers to help with the rescue operation.

The helicopter, which was carrying a patient to a hospital on the mainland of South Korea, crashed shortly after taking off from Dokdo, a fire department official said.

The islands are called Takeshima in Japanese, and are controlled by South Korea by a small division of the Coast Guard.
