Bangladesh Prime Minister Awami League Sheikh Hasina won the country’s controversial election on Sunday, local television reported.
Hasina’s pacts easily overcome the 151 parliamentary seats needed to form the government, local media reported.
The elections in Bangladesh were overshadowed by protests and violence. At least 17 people were killed in clashes between supporters of the government and the opposition during election process on Sunday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remains in power. She is also referred to as the “Angela Merkel of Asia” her country has received hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees.
Thousands of opposition workers were arrested during the elections.
It is pertinent to note that the head of biggest opposition party Khalida Zia serving jail term on alleged corruption charges.
