The pioneers of social media circulated a number of snapshots of the earthquake that struck the southern Philippine on Sunday, causing the death of a child, the collapse of buildings and severe damage to another.

Officials said a strong earthquake struck near the Philippine city of Davao on Sunday, killing a girl and damaging buildings and causing some injuries.

Preliminary scenes from the Philippine earthquake this morning.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and its epicenter was 61 km southwest of Davao on the southern island of Mindanao, at a depth of 28.2 km, lowering its initial estimate of the earthquake’s strength from 6.9.

The mayor of Matanao, a 2nd class municipality in the province of Davao del Sur, near the epicenter, said a six-year-old girl had died after a wall fell on it, adding that the extent of the damage was not yet clear, but the authorities needed aid from food, water and blankets to provide to the population.
