Turkey’s main opposition party has announced that its candidate for the post of mayor of Istanbul is still slightly ahead of Erdogan’s AKP candidate after half of the ballot boxes have been re-screened.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP), hit by the economic slowdown, suffered a major shock from its possible loss in Istanbul, the capital of Ankara, in the municipal elections held on Sunday and the party challenged the results of the two cities.

On Sunday, Sky News quoted the opposition Republican People’s Party as saying its candidate Akram Emamoglu had won 17919 votes after nearly 49 percent of the ballot boxes were counted. The margin is still very small in an election where each candidate received about four million votes.
