US drone strikes killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, before dawn yesterday in Baghdad, sparking fears of a regional war between Washington and Tehran.

Iran has promised “severe vengeance” in response, while several countries including China have urged all parties to avoid any action.

“China opposes the use of force in international relations. There is no way out of action or the use of extreme pressure”, Wang Yi said.

China is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UN) and is also the main partner of Tehran and the country’s main buyer of oil.
