The US Geological Survey said on Sunday that a 6.8-magnitude quake was recorded in the South Pacific in eastern New Caledonia, but there were no immediate reports of damage or warnings of giant tsunamis.

The quake was recorded 179 km east of Tadine in the Loyalty Islands at a depth of 14 km, the agency said.

New Caledonia is a dependent territory of France.
