A total of nine died when a light plane carrying an umbrella parachutist crashed in northwestern Sweden on Sunday, authorities said.

“Nine people on board had died,” Gabriella Bandling, a spokesman for the Vasterbotten region, told AFP.

According to the Swedish media, aircraft carrying parachutists were reported crashing at 2 pm local time.

Media reported that the GippsAero GA8 Airvan type aircraft departed from Umea airport, near here.

Amateur video footage posted on the Aftonbladet newspaper website shows the plane plunging from airspace vertically.

Plane debris was found in the southern island of Umea.
