Albanian media reported that the gunmen stole the money while it was being loaded inside an Austrian plane. Police exchanged bullets with the gunmen, killing one and evading the rest with stolen money..

The Government of Albania decided to deploy members of the military police and a battalion of special air force personnel around the airport to secure it after the incident.

The Central Bank of Albania pointed out that the Albanian Central Bank does not allow national banks to accept foreign currencies, which leads them to send them to private banks abroad.
