German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she wants Britain to maintain a close partnership with the European Union after it breaks away from the bloc, Brexit.

“We talked about Brexit and stressed the desire for a withdrawal that would result in a close partnership between Britain and EU member states,” Merkel told a joint news conference with visiting Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.

The new British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is working to reach a new agreement for the exit of his country from the European Union with the continued preparations without an agreement from the bloc, by 31 October.
