Brexit exit effect: Honda to close plant in UK

Honda car factory in Swindon, UK, is threatening closure. According to a report, the Japanese carmaker plans to give up the plant with around 3,500 jobs.

The plans are expected to be announced in the near future. They would be on the verge of leaving the country from the European Union at the end of March.

Honda did not want to comment on the report on request. However, the auto industry has repeatedly warned in recent years that a tough Brexit is threatening the future of the industry in the UK.

The Honda factory in Swindon is the manufacturer’s only European factory. It was built more than three decades ago.

The company assembles the Civic model there. Just last week, American automaker Ford warned that a tough Brexit would have “catastrophic” consequences for its British manufacturing and auto industry on the island as a whole.

Other companies such as the German automaker BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and Nissan are worried about the Brexit.

The background is that a disorderly EU exit threatens the reintroduction of tariffs in British-European trade.
