Canadian Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne Sunday called on all Canadians to avoid unnecessary travel to the Chinese province of Hubei due to the spread of the new Corona virus, noting that Canadian consular officials are monitoring the situation and are in constant contact with local authorities.

According to the Spectator Index facts sheet 80 people dead, nearly 400 people in critical condition. Sixteen countries have confirmed the cases with majority in China and over 2300 are infected with coronavirus.

“The safety and security of Canadians abroad are our top priorities since January 22, Chinese authorities have imposed unnecessary travel to and from Wuhan, Hubei Province in China due to the spread of Corona virus”, Champagne said in a statement. “We understand Canadians’ concerns in the region. The interests of their families and loved ones … We are in contact with the Canadians currently on the ground and providing assistance to them”.

“Canadian consular officials are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with local authorities and our international partners to collect more information and provide support to the maximum extent possible … Canada has no consular presence in Wuhan”, he added.

Champaign stressed that the advice to Canadians is, “Avoid unnecessary travel to Hubei Province, China, including the cities of Wuhan, Huangang and ISO, due to severe travel restrictions …. Canadians should check travel tips and advice”.

On Saturday, Canada has officially announced that Toronto’s public health authorities have received notification of the first confirmed case of coronavirus in a resident who recently returned from Wuhan, China, and the statement said, “This person is in stable condition and is being treated in hospital”.
