The Canadian government decided on Friday to appoint more federal judges to handle asylum claims it expects to increase in the coming period, particularly asylum applications from those who entered the country illegally..
Official statistics showed that 5,525 people applied for asylum last year in 2018, more than a third of them returning to asylum seekers who entered the country illegally.
The waiting period for applications is 21 to 24 months before the asylum seeker is first brought before the Immigration and Refugee Committee of Canada.
The Government decided to raise the number of judges from 36 to 39 judges permanently to process and decide on applications.
The Government’s decision was welcomed by the Canadian Refugee Council. The Director of the Council, Janet Dench, confirmed that delays in processing applications left many complications on the families of asylum seekers.
