Canadian opposition leader Andrew Scheer is facing sharp criticism in the country for holding dual US-Canadian citizenship as he seeks to win the next election and become prime minister.
A spokesman for Scheer says he is now relinquishing that nationality, but so far there has been no confirmation from the United States that it has been abandoned.
Scheer’s father was an American, Scheer and his sisters got their American passports as children. He reportedly left his US passport in force and tried to give it up before dropping the election order.
Scheer’s communications director Brock Harrison said, the opposition leader did not vote in any US election. “Once Andrew Scheer became the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, he decided to give up his US citizenship before the election. In August, he informed the US government that he would give up his citizenship”, said Harrison.
