Twelve Israeli tourists were jailed in Cyprus on Thursday over the alleged gang rape of a British teenager at her hotel in the popular resort of Ayia Napa.

Young men between the ages of 16 and 18 are suspected of raping the girl in a hotel room in the popular holiday destination of Ayia Napa, on the south-eastern coast of Cyprus.

The tourist told police that the incident took place on Wednesday morning in her hotel room, and doctors said they found bruises and scratches on her body.

The suspects, who have not yet been charged, were brought before a local court in Paralimni town on Thursday, where a judge ordered them to be held for up to eight days pending investigations.

The judicial proceedings were held in closed session in accordance with Cypriot law with regard to rape cases and because some suspects were detained.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that 12 Israeli citizens were arrested and their families notified.

The Times of Israel said some of those involved in the alleged attack were boys, and that the alleged victim was 19.
