French troops joined police in Paris on Saturday to deal with the ongoing “yellow jackets” protests for the 19th straight week against President Emmanuel Macaron’s government.

Protesters were prevented from gathering in the Champs-Elysées after looting shops, institutions and sabotage last weekend, prompting the government to call up army units in the so-called Centennial operation.

Small groups of protesters gathered in other parts of Paris and other major French cities began the latest protests, after a general outcry over increased fuel taxes.

The movement has turned into a violent and wider backlash against the government of Macron, despite the government’s elimination of fuel taxes.
