Former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has spoken in favor of German Chancellor Angela Merkel  as the new EU Council President. In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Dutch politician Frans Timmermans endorsed German Chancellor the only person who knows the weight of Europe in the world and is willing to defend it against fierce resistance.

“Politically, we Europeans are in the middle of a competition between the liberal democracies and the authoritarian offerings in the world,” Gabriel said. “In order to survive this competition, Europe must muster its best. Angela Merkel is the best for this task. “

The heads of state and government of the EU are discussing the new leadership of the European Union this Thursday. The personnel package is about the succession of European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker and four other top posts.

The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said at the beginning of the two-day meeting, the hope for a quick agreement was muted. “At this moment, a solution is far away,” said Tajani on Thursday in Brussels.

Earlier, he had given Chancellor Angela Merkel and other heads of state and government the position of parliament.

Tajani reaffirmed Parliament’s intention to elect only one candidate for the European elections as the leading candidate. “This is a message to the citizens: more democracy, more transparency,” said Tajani.

He hoped that an agreement will be found and that a conflict between Parliament and the European Council will be avoided.
