Greece will close three of the largest migrant camps, located on an island near Turkey, and replace them with larger new facilities.

“At this point, efforts to tackle congestion on the island are a priority,” said the government’s special coordinator for migration, Alkiviadis Stefanis, who is also a former military general at a press conference.

Three migrant camps in Greece to be closed are in the islands of Lesbos, Chios and Samos, home to over 27,000 migrants.

The situation in all the camps, which could only accommodate 4,500 residents, was often criticized by the human rights group and the European Council.

Greek government said the three camps will be replaced by new facilities, which can accommodate 5,000 migrants in each camp.
