An Iranian sentenced to life imprisonment for developing pornographic websites escaped the country after being released from jail shortly, the Canadian foreign ministry and his family said.

“Canada welcomes the news that Saeed Malekpour has been reunited with his family here,” a ministry spokesman said in a statement.

“We have submitted Saeed’s release and are happy that he is currently in Canada,” the spokesman said without further explanation for privacy.

Accordingly, Iranian authorities yesterday confirmed television reports that Saeed, who is also a permanent resident of Canada, had left the country.

“The individual was prevented from leaving the country and appears to have fled an unofficial route and has not yet returned,” said Gholam hossein Esmaili, a spokesman for the judiciary.

“He was sentenced to life imprisonment,” Esmaili said, quoted by online news agency Mizan.

Iranian judiciary spokesperson said Saeed was given a three-day release on July 20 and did not return to prison after the term ended.

Canadian media reports that he arrived safely in Vancouver last Friday.
