Poland signs deal to buy US F-35 fighters worth $ 4.6 billion

Poland has signed a deal to buy 32 F-35 fighters worth $ 4.6-billion with the United States of America, in order to strengthen the air defenses of the eastern borders of NATO.

“This is a very important day for our air force, for Poland’s security, and for our European part,” Polish President Andrzej Doda said, according to ABC News on Friday.

The Polish Minister of Defense, Mariusz Blaszczak, signed the deal and handed the document to the US Ambassador to Warsaw, Georgette Mosbacher, during a ceremony held at the Air Force Academy in Dublin, eastern Poland.

Doda described as one of the largest deals in the history of the Polish armed forces and a sign of the strength of ties with Washington.

The Polish Defense Minister Blaszczak announced a few days ago that his country plans to purchase 32 new F-35 fighters from the United States of America at the end of this month.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather, stealth multirole combat aircraft, designed for ground-attack and air-superiority missions. … The aircraft descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, which in 2001 beat the Boeing X-32 to win the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.
