Preliminary indications of vote counting in the European Parliament elections in Austria showed the progress of the People’s Party followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPO).

Political sources said on Sunday in Vienna that the indicators are likely to get the People’s Party 34.5%, by 11 percentage points from the Socialist Party by 23.5%, and then the Party of Freedom by 17.5%, while the Green Party achieved significant progress in double figures from the previous elections and record ratio 13.5%, then Nois Party 8%.

Source added that the Socialist Party was not able to take advantage of the internal political turmoil that took place last week in Austria, where it received 23.5%, which means a slight loss compared to the European Parliament elections in 2014.

The sources pointed out that the Freedom Party was affected by the scandal of major corruption “Ibiza” and received only 17.5% of the vote, losing about 2.5 percentage points compared to the elections in 2014.

In the first reaction to the initial indications, Austrian Chancellor and People’s Party President Sebastian Kurz said this was the best historic result of the European elections in Austria.

Austrian Interior Minister Eckhart Ratz is due to announce the final results of the European Parliament elections in the country before midnight.
