Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov said on Saturday that Moscow is ready to hold talks with Washington on Venezuela, condemning the US pressure to Caracas.
Lavrov received a telephone call from his American counterpart Mike Pompeo on the situation in Venezuela, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by Russian media outlets.
Lavrov condemned US threats to Venezuela’s legitimate leadership as a blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and a flagrant violation of international law.
The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the incitement and destructive external influence under the pretext of the lack of humanitarian assistance, have nothing to do with the democratic process.
Lavrov expressed Moscow’s readiness to respond to the Washington proposal to hold bilateral consultations on the Venezuelan situation, provided that strict adherence to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, because only Venezuelans have the right to determine their future.
The two sides also discussed other international issues and agreed to continue contacts at the expert level on the matters of Syria, Afghanistan and the Korean Peninsula.
