Local officials evacuated nearly 200 people on Saturday, with about 350 firefighters and soldiers backed by 14 jets shooting down water, the fire that erupted since Friday evening in the central town of Morrox.

Firefighters said temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius, low humidity and high winds increased the flame.

Another fire near the city of Toledo, about 60 kilometers away, forced the evacuation of 22 residents, officials said.

The fires come at a time when Europe is experiencing a major heatwave, with temperatures in some parts of France reaching record highs.

Meteorologists are blamed for hot air from North Africa due to high temperatures early in the summer, but the heat wave is expected to ease.
