French police have arrested a man suspected of firing at a mosque in Bayonne in the southwest of France on Monday.

Two elderly men aged 74 and 78 were seriously injured in the case which occurred at 3.20pm local time while trying to prevent the attacker from burning the mosque, police said.

The man was arrested near his home after an incident that involved a small explosion, from a gas canister that was burned near the mosque.

The suspect is 84 years old and is associated with a far-right clan, police sources said.

Shooter also burned a car while fleeing the scene.

Sources familiar with the incident said the suspect had been a candidate for the National Rally party led by Marine Le Pen in 2015. Le Pen condemned the attack on the mosque.

“The attack is completely at odds with the value of our movement,” Le Pen said.

Police said a handgun was found in the suspect’s car.
