Saudi Arabia wants uranium enrichment for its nuclear program, the energy minister said on Monday, adding that it may complicate negotiations with the atomic agreement with Washington and the role of US companies.

Uranium enrichment has become one of the major issues with the US, after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said the country wanted to develop nuclear weapons, if Iran were to do the same.

The world’s largest oil exporter wants to use nuclear power to diversify its energy sources, but enrichment will open up the possibility of using uranium for military purpose.

“We try to get it carefully. We are conducting experiments with two nuclear reactors”, Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud said, referring to the tender of his first two reactors.

The country wants to continue its full nuclear program including the production and enrichment of uranium for atomic materials, he said at an energy conference in Abu Dhabi.
